Observations from Paris

This September, we had the chance to visit Paris using the Maison&Objet fair as an excuse. There we were able to see in person the Malle W. Trousseau kitchen set:

While we had read about the perfectly curated and ultimate collection of kitchen tools by French couple Isabelle Mathez and Frederic Winkler, it is impressive to see in person. The three trays of the cardboard trunk are organized by function: cutting, cooking, and containing. As someone who spends alot of time cooking and covets all things kitchenware, I wished I didn't already own the cookware I've assembled over the years. This quality set is sourced thoughtfully and is the gift of a lifetime, for a lifetime.

We were also enchanted by the exhibit of Astier de Villatte, recreating a storefront with the feel of their Paris shop.

Made of black terracotta clay with their signature glossy white milky glaze, the 18th- and 19th-century inspired ceramics are handcrafted in a traditional style passed down from generations. Handmade in an antique Bastille workshop home to Napoleon Bonaparte's own silversmith, each piece is both unique and imperfect. Mais oui!

Available at ABC Home.

As Maison&Object runs alongside Paris Design Week, the city offers a wide range of events and exhibitions. Spaces like Merci participate in the event:

Situated in the Marais, this "concept" store is a special place. Part fashion shop, design lab, and housewares store, it's more an experiment and collaboration than a retail experience. Founders Bernard and Marie-France Cohen, of Bonpoint the children's fashion label, created Merci in 2009 to bring together the best of these worlds. They also have an endowment fund created to finance acts of human development, particularly in the education area. Visit the Used Book Cafe for a good read and a noisette.
